Course Structure Course Contents
This is a study of topics such as external influences on Africa in the nineteenth century, the
replacement of the slave trade with trade in natural produce, the west African jihads of the
nineteenth century, the founding of Liberia and Sierra Leone, the influence of seyyid Said of
Oman on the economy of the East African coast, the Mfecane and the Great Trek. Other themes
examined include the modernization of Egypt, the Scramble for Africa, the sustenance of
Ethiopian independence during the period of European imperialism, the colonization and
decolonization of the continent, the problems of nation-building, neo-colonialism, the rise of
military dictatorship and arrested development.

explorers, missionaries and traders, impact of the Sokoto Jihad on Northern Nigeria
and Nigeria, consequences of the European presence on Nigeria’s history, resistance
to the imposition of colonial rule, colonial policies e.g. amalgamation, indirect rule,
e.tc, colonial economic policies, e.g. railway construction, cash (money) economy and
modern exchange economy, decolonization: meaning and definition, nationalism:
meaning and definition, constitutional developments in Nigeria, e.g. the Nigerian
Council, Richards Constitution, Macpherson and Lyttleton Constitutions, impact of
the various Constitutions on political development, formation of political parties, the
role of the press in decolonization process.
Course Structure Concept of International Political System. Evolution of International Political System – the
classical period (1648-1815) the peace of Wesphalia 1648, the post classical period (1815-1914)
– the congress of Vienna 1815, the congress of Vienna 1815, the transitional period (1914-1945)

Course Structure Atlantic slave trade-slavery and slave trade organization of the Atlantic slave trade, impact of the
Atlantic slave, trade on Africa. Industrial Revolution-Inventions, industrial revolution and its
impact on economic development in Africa. Legitimate trade-organizational features of
legitimate trade, system of exchange impact of the trade. Colonialism in African scramble, the
motive, colonialism and exploitation in Africa. Neocolonialism foundations of neoconolist
capitalist system in Africa, Implications for Africa’s economic, political and socio-economic
development. Imperialism and dependency: European community-third world relationship,
dependency, model.
Course Structure The major concepts: Foreign Service, diplomacy/diplomats defined and explained. Genesis and
early foundation of Nigeria’s Foreign Service, 1957-September 1960. Development of Nigeria’s
Foreign Service and rationale for the establishment of diplomatic relations. Who are on Foreign
Service? Diplomats: Appointment, Reception and Recall of diplomats on Foreign Service.
Administrative Structure of Nigeria’s foreign missions, general overview of Nigeria’s Foreign
Service under successive administrations, 1960-2019; diplomatic privileges and immunities and
their abuses. Tasks of Nigerian diplomats/ambassadors on Foreign missions, career versus non-
career diplomats; problems and prospects of Nigeria’s Foreign Service, etc.
Course Structure Major streams of Africa Diaspora. Atlantic slave trade and the origin modern African Diaspora
The “Reservoir Theory” and slave trade. The institution of slavery in Africa. The Status of the
blacks in North America. Early slave Resistance in the United States. A comparism of slavery in
America and Latin America. The slave question in the United States of America. The Africa
Diaspora and Africa socio-economic development.

the end of the Cold War.

The course examines the federal arrangement and division of power, critical issues in Nigerian
politics i.e. Census, elections; education; representation and representativeness, ethnic relations,
revenue allocation.
