Abstract The year 1960 remains remarkable in the African/European colonial relationship. It was the year that most African States under colonial rule gained independence. Chad was one of such African countries. She was colonized by France and gained independence on August 11, 1960. Shortly after independence, the civil war began between the Arab Muslim).north and the Sara (Christian) south, over the control of the .central government. The various factions involved in the Chadian (conflict were determined to gain advantage over one another. As a result, each employed the services of external powers to outwit the other. The external powers included France, Libya, Zaire, Nigeria, the US, Soviet Union and of course the OAU Peacekeeping Force. Soon, it became obvious that these external interveners, had their various reasons for their involvements in the Chadian war. While some reasons were humanitarian and moral, others were diplomatic, strategic and economic. This paper therefore examines the roles each of these external powers, •Deluding the OAU Peacekeeping Force, played in the Chadian conflict with emphasis on, the role of Nigeria on the conflict.

Abstract The paper explores the implications of xenophobic reciprocity on Nigeria-Ghana relations with emphasis on socio-economic and political impacts between the two countries. Using a qualitative methodology, the research draws on secondary sources, including academic literature, governmental reports, and media analyses to understand the historical context and contemporary manifestations of xenophobia. The thematic approach of research was also adopted. The research findings indicate that xenophobic actions have strained bilateral relations, impacting trade, migration, and cultural exchange negatively. The study underscores the importance of proactive policy measures and regional cooperation in addressing these tensions and fostering a more harmonious relationship between Nigeria and Ghana.

Abstract This paper examines poverty reduction in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria through production enterprise with the domestic gin industry of the Niger Delta as a case study. The entrenchment of unemployment and poverty in the Niger Delta occasioned by the destruction of the traditional occupations of fishing and farming through petroleum oil exploration activity and the imperative to reduce poverty are in line with the current global call for sustainable resource use as a strategy to reduce the incidence of poverty globally. Aside palm wine which is distilled to produce gin, the manifold utility of the various species of raffia palms native to the freshwater swamps of the Niger Delta and their exploitation on a wider scale seem a viable strategy for employment generation, stemming rural-urban drift, improving the socio-economic lives of the people and ultimately reducing the incidence of rural poverty. Palm wine and the locally distilled gin popularly known with epithets and appellations like Ogogoro, Sapele water, push- me-I-push-you, agbakara to name a few, occupy important places in the cultural space of the Niger Delta. A large market exists in the Niger Delta and beyond for palm wine, gin and the by-products of the raffia palm made from piassava, bamboo, fronds and other parts. The paper argues further that due to increasing youth restiveness and the perennial disruption of oil production in the region, there is the need to reinvent the Niger Delta gin industry by establishing resource based cottage industries and the expansion of those in existence.
